A survey run among EELISA researchers and academic staff in September 2022 revealed that many researchers feel parenthood is “a hurdle” for their research career and complain about incompatibility of raising children and keeping up with the demands of a top-level research position. What are the daily-life experiences in this regard? What are the current best practices and policies to support researchers who decide to raise a family? What are the issues that still need to be covered?
Following the success of the first EELISA public roundtable “Women who make science happen” (February 2022) and in the context of the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (11th of February), EELISA presents the II EELISA Roundtable “Parenting and STEM in the 21st Century: raising children, giving up science?”.
With the aim to open a space for reflection on this important issue from the perspective of a wide spectrum of realities, panelists with different backgrounds and positions within EELISA institutions as well as collaborators and experts will share their knowledge, work, and experience on this topic.
This is a hybrid event that will be preceded by a Welcome Coffee for on-site participants.

MEET THE PANELISTS
Julien Becker, Deputy General Secretary at ENPC in charge of professional gender equality
Before joining ENPC, he had already twenty years of experience in public administration, among several Ile-de-France prefectures and in positions with social value and strong societal impact: Directorate of Foreigners then at the Elections at Seine-Saint-Denis prefecture, Associations and Legality control Office at Seine-et-Marne prefecture, then Deputy Secretary General of Seine-Saint-Denis department.
Julien Becker has participated in the development of French language’s inclusive writing and has followed numerous awareness-raising sessions on professional equality and the fight against sexual and gender-based violence, promoting this major subject with public community officers. For the past year, he has been the gender equality referent at the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées for employees, where he has carried out numerous actions to implement the Gender Equality Plan.
Adeline Favier, Head of Human Ressources of PSL University
French civil servant with a Masters in Law & Public administration at Pantheon Sorbonne University, Adeline has been a Human Resources Professional since 2010.
Her interest for Human Resources and training gave her the opportunity to work in different administrations and environments such as the South Pacific – Wallis-and-Futuna, New Caledonia, the University of French Polynesia and the Civil Service Training Authority of French Polynesia. She also worked in higher education for the city of Paris at ESPCI Paris PSL
She is passionate about gender equality, inclusivity and public innovation, and enjoys organizing seminars and workshops using innovative group facilitation methods to generate ideas, find solutions & help make group decisions. On top of that, she is also breastfeeding while being a working mum.
Krisztina László, Professor, Former Vice-rector of BME
Krisztina László is a professor in physical chemistry with the main interest in porous and high surface area materials. She has supervised several master and PhD students and authored around 200 scientific papers. Besides her scientific activity, she has been on the panel of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences reviewing the proposals of scientists with young children since the beginning of this program in 2018.
From 2015 to 2018 she became the first female vice rector of BME.
She is also an active member of the Mentor Group at BME supporting young mothers returning from maternity leave.
Magda Luthay, Head of the Office for Gender and Diversity at FAU
Dr. Magda Luthay holds a degree in Middle Eastern Studies and Modern History from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Germany. Her thesis deals with the Implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) in the United Arab Emirates.
The FAU Office of Equality and Diversity is the central institution for the conceptualisation und implementation of the FAU gender equality and diversity strategy. This includes implementing different strategies at five faculties to increase the number of female academics in research and teaching as well as in academic top positions, especially in the field of STEM.
In addition, Magda Luthay has a long-term working experience in the media business as a journalist.
Prof. Mehmet Özgür Kayalıca, Senior Lecturer in the Energy Institute and Director of TEGAM (Technological and Economic Development Research Center) at Istanbul Technical University
His research focuses particularly on the microeconomics of environmental economics and energy economics. He is the co-author of International Environmental Efficiency: A Critical Analysis (Routledge, 2017), Artificial Intelligence for Knowledge Management (Springer, 2021); Decision-Making using AI in Energy and Sustainability (Springer, forthcoming) and Gender and Social development: Global Perspective’ (Springer, under internal review).
He has also published numerous articles in SCI/SSCI indexed journals. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Essex, UK. Besides, Kayalica has directed and participated in several national and international projects, as well as consulted for several international and national agencies.
Virginia Petre, Lecturer in the Faculty of Energy Engineering at UPB
Virginia graduated in 2014 under the Double Diploma Program between ENSAM, Ecole des Arts et Metiers ParisTech and University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest, where she currently works as a lecturer in the Faculty of Energy Engineering. She obtained her PhD title in 2019 under a double program between the same university and the National Institute of Applied Sciences from Lyon, and worked in research ever since. For the past 5 years, she has been involved in several European projects with different objectives. In 2021 she was in maternity leave until 2022, when she retook teaching and research activity within the Faculty of Energy Engineering.
Her latest intervention in terms of gender equality in STEM was for the project CALIPER, which aims to increase equality by increasing the number of female researchers in STEM, improving their career prospects and integrating the gender dimension into research.
Evangelia Ntormousi, Assistant professor at Scuola Normale Superiore
Her research focuses on working with numerical simulations of ISM turbulence and star formation.
She received her PhD from the LMU in Germany in 2012, and then moved to CEA, France as a postdoc until 2017. She was a Marie-Curie fellow at FORTH, Greece until 2020, when she moved to SNS for a postdoc before obtaining her current position.
Antonella Bogoni, Professor at Scuola Sant’Anna, Director of Photonic Networks & Technologies National Laboratory (PNTLab) and Interuniversity National Consortium for Telecommunications
From 2020 to 2021 she has also been technical responsible of the Integrated Photonic Technologies Center-INPHOTEC, a technology center for the fabrication and packaging of integrated photonic circuits and leader of the “digital & microwave photonics” area.
Her research activity is specialised on photonics technologies for optical communication and sensing, with special focus on Security, Space, Automotive and precise agriculture applications.
