La bibliothèque de l'Arsenal dans Le Magicien (Rex Ingram), 1926

Christophe Gauthier, archivist paleographer (class 1997), professor of History of the Book and Contemporary Media at the École nationale des chartes - PSL, gives a lecture entitled "When Ecole des Chartes' researchers go to the movies. The development of a new expertise" as part of the École's bicentennial celebration.

In 1983, nearly ninety years after the cinema was invented, that the first dissertation on the history of cinema was defended at the École nationale des chartes - PSL. This might lead one to believe that archivist paleographers have long been indifferent to moving images.

However, this is not true, since Marcel Poëte worked at the Bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris, there have been many who have promoted the conservation of films, and who have subsequently been offered this work of a new kind.

However, we will not only talk about this expected extension of the professional skills of the ENC researchers, who worked as experts, historical consultants, sometimes even film critics; they were, in various capacities, the unexpected promoters of a still new art.
