Betelgeuse, in the constellation Orion, is a red supergiant star that can be seen with the naked eye during winter.
At the end of its life, it will explode into a supernova and will then be as bright as the full Moon at night and even visible during the day. It will then become a neutron star or a black hole. In the winter of 2019-2020, Betelgeuse suffered a famous loss of brightness. In this webinar, Miguel Montargès will present his team's results, published in Nature in June 2021, from their observations in Chile on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and the VLT Interferometer (VLTI).
The presentation will last 30 minutes and will be followed by a 15-minute Q&A session.
