Beauty and self-development

beauté

Self-esteem plays a key role in the processes of resilience and development of an individual. What role does beauty play in this? Can it be a path to self-knowledge and inner truth, or a resource from which individuals can structure their lives?

The PSL-L'Oréal Beauty Studies Chair is opening a new online conference and invites three leading scientific and artistic personalities to discuss, in the context of an unprecedented encounter, the links that form the relationship between beauty on the one hand, and the construction of the individual on the other.

SPEAKERS

Gisèle Dambuyant-Wargny is a senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University Paris 13, Bobigny and Associate Researcher at the Edgar Morin Center.

She specializes in the fields of precariousness, social work and socio-aesthetics. Currently her research is focused on social workers, their professional realities and their training.

Gisèle Dambuyant-Warny is also Vice-President of the Réseau Universitaire des Formations du Social (RUFS).

Camille Froidevaux-Metterie is a feminist philosopher, Professor of Political Science and Equality Officer at the Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne.

She dedicates her research to the changes that followed the turning point of feminist emancipation (La révolution du féminin, Gallimard, 2015; Folio Essais, 2020). She approaches them from a phenomenological perspective that places the body at the center of reflection.

After Le corps des femmes. La bataille de l'intime (2018), in which she reports on the "genital turn of feminism", she published Seins. En quête d'une libération (Anamosa, 2020).

ORLAN is a visual artist whose works are part of the collections of major institutions in Europe and internationally. Always mixed with humor, sometimes parody or even grotesque, her work questions social phenomena and artistic practices by changing pre-established codes.

She uses painting, drawing, collage, silkscreen printing, sculpture, photography, performance, video, 3D, video games, augmented reality, A.I., robotics, as well as scientific and medical techniques such as surgery and biotechnologies.
