A debate with Sanjay Subrahmanyam

Empires entre Islam et Chrétienté Sanjay Subrahmanyam

The Graduate Program in Religious Studies at Université PSL invites you to a discussion on the book Empire between Islam and Christianity (1500-1800, Paris 2021) by Sanjay Subrahmanyam (University of California at Los Angeles).

What if, between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, the Portuguese, Spanish, Ottoman, Mughal and British empires had inspired one other? What if their history had more in common than we can imagine? Using archives and texts rarely used before, Sanjay Subrahmanyam offers a new and rich analysis of the empire, a political form too often neglected or reduced to its most contemporary manifestations, from Napoleon to the colonial model. A superb example of connected history, carried by a limpid writing, Empires between Islam and Christianity offers new insight on historical phenomena and makes us discover unknown universes while blending the political, economic, intellectual and cultural approaches. From the shores of the Mediterranean to the Indian continent via the Americas, a world emerges that is "diverse, varied and invariably multipolar", and surprisingly modern.
