- Symposium - What costume (stage costume!) tells us
Memory of gesture, vector of narration and object of creation, the stage costume is at the heart of this colloquium organised by the Association for Dance and Lyric Arts of the EPHE, dedicated to its aesthetic, historical and practical dimensions.
At a time when stage costume is playing an increasingly important role in art history and theatre studies research, this conference aims to showcase emerging work and foster exchanges between young researchers.
A true theatrical language, costume is not limited to appearance: it conveys a narrative, reflects dramaturgical choices, and reveals skills often invisible to the audience. It is now central to numerous academic studies, as well as museum projects.
Organized by the Association for Dance and Lyric Arts at the EPHE (École Pratique des Hautes Études), this conference offers a space for collective reflection on how costume comes to life on stage, evolves, and reinvents itself in contemporary performing arts practices. The presentations will also explore what costume reveals about production conditions, staging choices, and the technical innovations that shape the stage, both past and present.
