- Unveiling the École des chartes - PSL's stamp
On February 22, 2021, two hundred years to the day after its creation, the École des chartes - PSL celebrates its bicentennial. La Poste will unveil the commemorative stamp engraved on this occasion; this presentation will be followed by a commentary on the founding ordinance of February 22, 1821, by Édouard Vasseur, professor of History of Institutions, Diplomacy and Contemporary Archival Studies at the École des chartes - PSL, and Jean-Charles Bédague, Secretary General of the Société de l'École des chartes - PSL.
The ceremony will be broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the École des chartes - PSL and Philaposte on Monday, February 22, 2021 at 11 am.
History at a glance
The École nationale des chartes - PSL is a higher education institution based in Paris that trains executives in the conservation of heritage, mainly written (archives and libraries), as well as researchers and teachers in the field of historical sciences. This school of excellence, which grants the degree of archivist paleographer, the master's degree and the doctorate, was created by the ordinance of February 22, 1821 to ensure the dissemination of the knowledge required to the research and reading of ancient manuscript documents. Since then, it has been an original institution through the unique gathering of skills that are needed to the understanding of the past: paleography, diplomacy, archival science, history of books, philology, history of law, history of art, archaeology.
During its two hundred years of existence, the École des Chartes - PSL has participated in all the political, social and cultural movements in the history of France. At the service of archives, libraries, museums, research and universities, companies, its alumni and students have helped the development of heritage awareness, both in France and abroad.
The stamp issued on the occasion of its bicentenary is a reminder that this school of secellence, long located on the premises of the Sorbonne (seen from the entrance portal, center), has been able to blend tradition with innovation, as indicated by a medieval charter (left), from the holdings of the Departmental Archives of the Côte-d'Or directed by a former student of the School (charter dated 1259 and sealed by the abbot of Cîteaux and the four abbots of the four daughters of Cîteaux, file number PS 2518), and its digital encoding (right) carried out by graduates of the master's degree "Digital Technologies Applied to History" of the École des Chartes - PSL.
