Mathieu Lescuyer, archivist paleographer (1993 class), assistant to the director of the Department of Manuscripts at the BnF, and Marc Smith, archivist paleographer (1988 class), professor of paleography at the École nationale des chartes - PSL, will give a lecture entitled "Secrets d'art et d'artisanat à la Renaissance" (Secrets of Arts and Crafts in the Renaissance period), as part of the series on the "Trésors de Richelieu" (Richelieu's treasures), which is being organized by the Institut national d'histoire de l'art, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the École nationale des chartes - PSL.
The French 640 manuscript is a "book of secrets," or collection of artistic and craft processes, with a special feature: not at all a banal list, it documents in detail the relentless experiments carried out in Toulouse in the 1580s by an unknown man with a passion for molding, casting and painting, the imitation of natural objects as well as artillery. Columbia University in New York has just published, under the direction of Pamela H. Smith, an extraordinary electronic edition with commentary, after six years of study and laboratory experiments.
