Shanghai ARWU 2025 ranking: Université PSL confirms its place in the world's top 40

Université PSL, ranked 34th worldwide, confirms its place in the top 40 alongside the world's leading universities

With a slight fluctuation compared to 2024 (33rd), PSL University confirms its place as a world-class university. The 2025 ranking highlights the stability of the world's top 40, which year after year is made up of the same institutions of excellence. It also confirms the continued progress of Chinese universities, whose presence is increasingly asserting itself throughout the ranking.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU, known as the Shanghai ranking) ranks 1,000 higher education and research institutions out of 20,000 worldwide (EUA estimate).

It is based on six weighted criteria:

• the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners among alumni,
• the number of Nobel Prize and Fields Medal winners among teaching and research staff,
• the number of highly cited researchers,
• the number of articles published in Nature and Science,
• the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index, as well as
• the academic performance of professors (assessed by taking the five previous indicators and dividing them by the number of permanent teaching and research staff).
